Built in the Victorian period in the Chicagoesque style
Notable featuresA very early Chicago school inspired design. Reminiscent of the steel cage of early Chicago buildings. Restrained and non-classical ornament focussing on the crowning cornice.
Noteable as the only remnant of I.M Prells urban project in 1888, where he was commissioned to redesign the Melbourne CBD, building 3 almost identical towers on separate sites, each of load bearing brick and around 11 storeys in height, second only to the APA and creating a dramatic effect on the Melbourne skyline. The buildings were originally named Prells I, II & 3. The Felton building was built around the same time, but a much smaller component of Prells project. HistoryArchitect: F.W Prell
