Notable features

The former McEwans and John Danks store is a lively Art-Noveau facade, one of the finest palazzo of this style remaining in the city. Currently a Bunnings warehouse, it features twin oriels, balancing the facades on both sides in a similar effect to the Queensland building on Queen Street and the Auditorium, Mansions Apartments (demolished) and Centreway buildings on Collins Street. Much controversy has surrounded this building for many years, with Bunnings seeking approval to demolish the building for an office tower. The building was left for many years in deliberate state of decay, with heavy damage to the facade and structure evident. In October 2002 a proposal has seen the retention of the building shell as an apartment tower with podium carparking and commercial base. Whether the graceful facade is conserved remains to be seen.
